My picks of some of the best from Left to Right

[Title] The Charles F Stanley Life Principles Bible. Based on NASV.

‘This Bible is designed to lead believers into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ. The work is built around thirty life principles that Dr Stanley has discovered in God’s word through his nearly 50 years of Bible teaching and pastoral ministry. Through this bible, readers will learn and understand truths that lead to a life that is exciting and pleasing to God’.

[Title] The Holy Bible New King James. Based on AV.

Amanda says ~ This Bible has retained both the precision and poetry of the 17th century version that was originally authorised by King James. But I think that people who had difficulty with some of the old idiomatic English will really appreciate the improved clarity of the New King James.

[Title] Complete Jewish Bible by David H Stern.

Bible text for the OT was paraphrased by the author from a widely used English language version of Tanakh by the J.P.S. and was first published in 1917. Bible text for the Jewish New Testament first published in 1989 was translated by the author directly from the Greek NT scriptures.’The Complete Jewish Bible reconnects Christians with the Jewish roots of their Messianic faith. It also connects Jews with the Jewishness of Messiah Yeshua and the Messianic faith’. Amanda says~I really recommend this Bible because I have found it to be an ongoing revelation, a real gem. Every believer should have a reference copy.

[Title] Good News Bible-Rainbow Edition by U.B.S.

[Bible text is based on a U.B.S.paraphrase=Dynamically Equivalent translation entitled ‘The Bible in Today’s English’ ].

'It is with prayer, that the Lord of the Scriptures will be pleased to use this translation for his sovereign purpose that the United Bible Societies now publish 'The Bible in Today's English'.‘The Bible is not simply great literature to be admired and revered; it is Good News for all people everywhere-a message to be both understood and to be applied to daily life’.’And to Christ be the Glory forever and ever Amen’.

[Title] The Living Bible[Paraphrase/Popular translation]

‘In this wonderful day of many new translations and revisions we can greet another new one with either dread or joy. Dread that “people will become confused” or joy that someone will understand more perfectly what the bible is talking about. We choose the way of joy. For each new presentation of God’s Word will find its circle, large or small, of those to whom it will minister strength and blessing’.’There are dangers in paraphrases, as well as values. For whenever the author’s exact words are not translated from the original languages, there is a possibility that the translator, however honest, may be giving the English reader something that the original writer did not mean to say. This is because a paraphrase is not only guided by the translator’s skill in simplifying but also by the clarity of his understanding of what the author meant and by his (own) theology’.(However)’if it makes the bible easier to understand and follow, deepening the Christian lives of its readers and making it easier for them to follow their Lord, then it has achieved its goal’.

Amanda says ~ This is still a very clear, dynamic, accessible Bible. Good for beginners or those who are still seeking.

[Title] New International Version-Cross Reference Bible

[This Bible by the International Bible Society, is a 1984 paraphrase based on the text of the Authorised Version. Useful features include a Centre Column Cross Reference, NIV Mini Concordance and Colour Maps],

‘It has often been noted that the best commentary on the bible is the Bible itself. In this cross reference edition of the NIV, the Bible test is supplemented by a centre column of references, which direct the reader to further passages that expand, clarify or reinforce the meaning of the verses being read. A comprehensive concordance and a short Bible atlas add to the usefulness of this bible as an invaluable but compact resource for biblical study’.

Amanda says ~ The NIV was the third Bible that I owned after I became a Christian. I was at the stage where I needed to dig a bit deeper than the surface text in order to understand more about the historical context of my faith. I found the concordance and the maps particularly helpful, and in fact years later I still do find them very useful.
